Direct Action: Alleviating
Poverty- Financial Services for the Poor
THE

"Linking

The
Enabling Technology and Business Platform For The Modern Micro Finance
Industry
A number of
studies and papers have been conducted and written about the great and
enhancing effects of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and
the related improvements in the Business Processes in the Micro Finance
Industry. Prominent among these papers are the ones prepared and
written by David Craknell on "Electronic banking for the poor- panacea,
potentials and pitfalls" as well as several insights given by Ms. Janine
Firpo such as her paper on "Banking the Unbanked: Technology’s Role in
Delivering Accessible Financial Services for the
Poor"
While a good
number of pilot projects and implementations have been conducted the
last few years, most of these past and present projects are focused
on addressing just one or two or a few aspects of the problems or
objectives. So far there is no end-to-end nor
an all-encompassing solution that is available that can easily and
cost-effectively be customized and/or configured to any environment
or country. Nor has there been any recorded attempt to develop such an
enormous system. So the search for that "Holy Grail" or "panacea" for
the quantum improvement in the efficiency, reach, and cost
effectiveness of micro finance goes on.
The NATIONLINK
NETWORK aims to address these requirements by providing an "Enabling
Technology and Business Platform" of delivering and servicing the
various financial/banking needs of the poor.
NATIONLINK's
proponents early on recognized the need of delivering that
crucial honest-to-goodness system- "A system of formal financial
services" to the world's poor wherever they may be. By "formal financial
services" we mean just that- not a handicapped mobile phone service
for balance inquiry and fund transfer. The proponents of NATIONLINK
believe that the poor deserves no less than the same modern banking and
financial services that we take for granted in the urban areas. Lastly,
the proponents of NATIONLINK believe that the availability
of a cost-effective National Payment System supported by
modern micro finance that can be accessed by the poor in the
remote areas will spur economic development that can have life
transforming effect.
To achieve
this objective requires vast resources but what has been proven in
NATIONLINK is when several sectors, such as Rural/Thrift Banks, Credit
Cooperatives (Credit Unions), MFI's NGOs, other non-bank financial
institutions, and local enterprises or merchants, work and link their
resources together, miraculous things happen. The NATIONLINK NETWORK
provides these like-minded service oriented institutions the means to be
able to work together in a common network that enable their
offices or branches to serve as "point-of-presence" or
"points-of-delivery" of these vital financial services to the poor
especially in the remote areas of any
country.
The NATIONLINK
Platform host the necessary applications that makes up an
honest-to-goodness bank: Deposit, Micro Finance Loans, Accounting and
Reconciliation, ATM and ATM equivalent Driving and
Switching, EFT/Money Remittance, Customer Information, and MIS.
Complementing these banking applications is a robust multi-channel
electronic delivery system. The NATIONLINK services are delivered
through an electronic wire or wireless network to applicable
devices (Self-service or manned "human ATMs" kiosk) that may be
powered from various sources. National networks or regional networks can
be created with the platform that can also easily interconnect with one
another or with other standard-based payment/ATM networks
Put simply,
the NATIONLINK NETWORK Platform enables the micro finance
institution's officer, professional, or volunteer to concentrate on
what he/she does best wherever he may be and not be worried or
hindered by the supporting back-office system and front-office
infrastructure. On the other hand, senior management, donors
or fund providers, regulatory bodies, and other stakeholders will have a
powerful platform to effect transparency and good governance through
timely, accurate, and properly structured or consolidated operational
and financial information delivered to them anytime wherever they may
be.
For the
last 25 years the people or proponents of NATIONLINK have made it their
passionate and relentless mission to bring modern sophisticated
“big-bank” systems and facilities to small and mid-sized banks and
financial institutions. Today, that undying commitment and passion is
bringing to the poor, especially those on remote areas, that same
world-class banking and financial services.
